Space Exploration Merit Badge and reference sheet

Posted on Nov 28 2011 - 6:22pm

It is time to get ready for Space Exploration Merit Badge.  We will be instructing the Merit Badge during November and December.  One of the requirements is for the Scout to build and fly his own rocket.  We are planning to build rockets at the troop meeting on November 16th and finish them on November 30th.   We will fly them at Plaster City on December 3rd.

Each Scout is responsible to obtain his own kit to build.

For first time builders, Merit Badge counselor Mr. Bosworth recommends the following:
- Level 1 rocket
- Diameter of at least one inch
- Balsa fins

Smaller diameter and higher complexity rockets present issues first time builders shouldn't need to deal with.  And the rockets with pre-molded plastic fin cans are marginal in terms of meeting the requirements of the merit badge.        Good models are:  Estes Big Bertha, Little Bertha, Patriot Missile and similar.

Local sources for rockets are Hobby People, Discount Hobby Warehouse, and Hobby Central.  Online, I usually wind up buying from Tower Hobbies (rocketfun.com).

Any Scout who is planning to take the merit badge, or who wants to build their rocket with the Troop on November 16 should order or purchase a kit now, to allow plenty of time for shipment.  Do not open your kits before build night.  There are many small parts that are easily lost from open kit bags!

Bring at least six motors for your rocket.  Also, please do not plan to bring a launch controller or launch pad to the Plaster City launch.  We will be launching only with Club equipment.

See attached merit badge reference sheet

Any questions, contact ASM Mr. Bosworth
